This is the place to discuss everything related to the almost 103 year history of AFC Ajax Amsterdam. Including: former home grounds, former players, trophies and - of course - all your personal nostalgia... If you have questions about Ajax' history, feel free to post them here and we will try to find the answers...

The first installment in 2003 of Menno's monthly peek at Ajax, 15 years ago is really a great one. It describes the battle of wills between chairman Ton Harmsen and the club's enigmatic young coach, Johan Cruijff. Check it out!

Really good one for sure....
However, I feel surprised that you gave credit to an article discussing Christian Chivu's possible departure to Barcelona (if they find the money, here about 20M euros/dollars), where they describe him as a wing back..... ;)
I would prefer him in Barcelona than in Madrid though.
Happy new year to everybody :birthday:

Came across this link on Ajax Netwerk - seems like it could be a good read.

This is, in fact, the official English edition of Ajax, De Joden, Nederland. Exactly, ladies and gentleman: the book that has been on Ajax USA forever, in our (my) own translation.
I believe the English edition is not an exact translation. Some chapters were left out and I believe he added a few new things. But the most spectacular stories are already available on Ajax USA. Just follow this link:

It's there: the updated, revised and extended English version of Simon Kuper's Ajax, de Joden, Nederland. The English title is Ajax, The Dutch, The War.
Several chapters have been added and Kuper revised the entire book, so it's probably not the same as our translation of the Dutch book on Ajax USA.
You can order it here, on Amazon.co.uk:

Go for it!

Let's see... In February of 1988, I was living in Kennington, South London (yeah, by the Oval!), working for London's Australasian Magazine, making subsistence wages and spending a lot of time in divebars, cabaret clubs and trendy crap discos, not to mention eating a lot of great curries and watching a lot of great movies at the Everyman in Hampstead Heath (Gloriah Grahame festival comes to mind) and the Scala in Kings Cross (anyone else go to see Basket Case there, or the unforgettable Russ Meyers Triple Bill?). I was also playing softball in Regents Park, and -- oh yeah -- taking my first trips to Amsterdam, though I didn't give a damn about soccer or Ajax at the time.
What was I missing? Well, Ajax were getting beaten by PSV, while the F-Side was pelting Hans van Breukelen with eggs. Don't believe me? Read all about it right here:

Thanks Menno for the update re: Simon Kuper's magnum opus and most especially for an egg-ceptional Ajax..Fifteen Years Ago . Brings memories flooding back.

Picked up the book at Luton Airport on Saturday and who should get a mention on the first page, none other than our very own Menno and the Ajax-USA.com website.
Great to see and the book is a great but disturbing read - but one which I would recommend.

It's March 01... Time for a new episode of our monthly feature Ajax... 15 Years Ago.
March 1988 was the month in which Ajax played Young Boys (Switzerland) in the quarter finals of the European Cup Winners Cup, in which the new head-coach for the 1988-1989 season was announced (the official successor of Johan Cruyff) and in which young defender Danny Hesp broke his leg in one of the most horrific football accidents I have ever seen.
And: Oranje in preparation for Euro 88. March 1988 was the month of the first prestigious friendly of the preparation campaign. At Wembley - against England!
Board the Ajax USA time machine and take a peek...

It's April 01 - and time for a new episode of our monthly feature 15 Years Ago (not a joke! ).
As readers of 15 years Ago will have noticed, the 1987-1988 season wasn't a good season for Ajax. The Eredivisie soon turned out to be a 'mission impossible' and there was a scandalous elimination in the cup. The only positive thing was the fine run in the European Cup Winners Cup, although the opposition was not very attractive. This, however, changed in April, the month in which Ajax played two semi-final games against Olympique Marseille, from France...

And while you're in a sentimental mood, you should also read the April 1978 (25 years ago) English edition from De Goeie Ouwe Tijd.

Hello Ajax fans - what's news? How is your season going?
I support Leeds - and we are having a nightmare (you can laugh if you have to!).

Er... You're asking for 'news' in the Ajax History thread...?
Our season's not too bad, really. Champions League quarter final - that kind of thing. But we can still end up having a sh#t season. That is: out of the cup, which already happened, and dropping to third in the league so we don't qualify for for next season's Champs League... It can happen, but it won't.
