Is he injured? I'm an American and I haven't heard anything about him for a while. If he is injured, when is he supposed to be fit?

In short he is injured, will be injured and WAS injured since...well....the beginning of time it seems. He is recovering quite well but he's still not available for match-action. However the answer to your question can be written in a couple of pages given John's extensive injury history - maybe one of the other Americans can give you more details than I'm willing to do.
Cheers

I have a question about Johnny Boy ??? Isn't there a long injury clause in his contract which allows Ajax to stop paying him or somehting like that ?? I mean he hasn't played 3 matches in a row for two last years, it's time he got fit now !!!! We can't wait eternally for him to come back, as good as he can be (and God kows he is....)

"It's slowly becoming a dramatic story. John was a main-stay for the team. And so it shows: now he's injured, I have no permanent left-back. We will see on Sunday who will play at that position. There will be one more training session tomorrow and after that I will decide who will play there. I've already decided for myself, though." - Ronald Koeman, about John O'Brien and his persistent injury (Source: Ajax.nl)

I would like to see him get fit, but the only way that he is going to get fit if he waits until he is 100% to come back. When he continually starts playing again and isn't at full strength, he just opens himself up to reinjury. He's a great player and I would like to see him get healthy and succeed.

Finally there is excellent news - although I must say that I read this in the newspaper that is not exactly known as Holland's most reliable, namely De Telegraaf.
John O'Brien is expected to return to action on Tuesday night, in Young Ajax's Amstel Cup away game in Enschede, against the first team of FC Twente!!
That would be absolutely great. It will be a major encouragement for him if he can play his first minutes before the winter-break, as a reward for his hard work. I really hope we can welcome him back on Tuesday night.

He's been away for so long that I've taken him out of the equation. He can contribute if he gets fit no doubt about it. The question is if he can pick up his old game after being away for so long. It's one thing to come back physically but what about football-skills. It's a shame that he's been out of it for so long and it's a shame, but I have doubts that he'll make it back into the first team. The way I see it both Maxwell and van Damme (when fit again) are ahead of him in pecking order. He may have to wait a long time before seing 1st team avtion again - despite being physically ready.

I am stoked to here this news. I hope he can return to full strength quickly. Although I respect Per's opinion, I think JOB will be welcomed back to the first team quickly, his experience and calm play would be a welcome sight. I don't think he takes Maxwell's slot... but he'll unseat Jelle in a heartbeat.

I also think JOB is better than Jelle, or atleast was better. What I've seen from Jelle is much improvement this year - still a JOB in old shape would probably be better. I'm just not certain that that shape will come back as quickly as one might hope, he has been away from playing for a very long time.
Anyway, great news as we need all the players we can get!

I've always liked having Maxwell as left midfielder. With JOB (if heäll get back in good old form) as left defender and Maxwell as left midfielder I think we'd have quite an skillful left side.

i like this kind of Left side for Ajax and i think JOB can regain his spot in the first 11. hopefully he will play a good game against FC Twente with Jong Ajax to start his quest for the first 11 and have all the friendly games during the winter break to prove that he still got it to be in the top flight

If (repeat: if) he gets completely match fit before the second season half (by playing with Young Ajax and some friendlies in Portugal) he will surely get the chance in the first team, for the simple reason that we will have to miss out on both Trabelsi and Maxwell for a few games in January. They will go on tour with, respectively, the Tunisian national team (African Nations Cup) and the Brazilian Olympic team (qualifiers, I think).
That's exactly why John's return is perfectly timed: it will automatically give him the opportunity to prove himself in January. But in order for that to happen, he really can't afford to get a relapse now. He must get match fit. Otherwise things will really start to look bad for him at Ajax.
The next six, seven weeks will be critical for John, is my feeling.

Well, Menno's "master plan" for O'Brien's return is now perfectly positioned to come true. I just spoke to him (see the text of my interview on Ajax USA), and he is fully fit and hopes to prove himself in the January friendlies and get back into the starting eleven. I really hope he makes it happen. It'd be a real treat to see him play for Ajax 1 when we're there in February!!!

Great interview/article on JOB in today's Het Parool, elegantly translated by Menno and published on Ajax USA. Makes me realize just how amateurish my own interviews are... This really gives a picture of player and person.

Particularly for American Ajax fans, there is a very interesting difference in the community of folks in this (SP) forum and those in BigSoccer. Take, for instance, the reaction to this group to the recent Het Parool article on J.O.B.
None. No responses posted here.
I interpret that like this: Those of you who read it thought, "Great article (I mean, really nice job by the interviewer/writer) and very interesting insights into John's personal character. Okay, what's next?"
Over on BS, many of the reactions go like this:
1) Scan it quickly for something scandalous for the gossip mill, and/or something for the transfer-rumor mill.
2) Pass it through the "Good American/Bad American" filter.
3) Pass judgment on the guy, thereby punishing him for doing what most professional athletes won't do: being honest. And in passing judgment, be sure to expose your ignorance and biases.
4) Repeat.
