Of course this kid deserves his own discussion thread! He's just great. He has the looks, he has the moves, he has the swagger and (we missed that type of player) he has the cross! He's exactly what an Ajax fan wants to see.

And guess what: he was the special guest in yesterday's FC Godenzonen show on AT5 and he was a total gentleman. Talking calmly, in a deep voice. Intelligent. Relatively eloquent. He finished high school, so he's not a dummy.

He's the man, he has the magic: Daniël de Ridder. His team-mates refer to him as Dani, except for 'The Man Who's Always Different' (Zlatan), who - for some mysterious reason - calls him Ridders. Which I think is a cool sounding nick, so I decided to adopt it.

If there's one guy in this ajax team i would want to succeed, it's de Ridder. I first met him when he was 12 years old and started at the highschool i was at. By then, his reputation had already reached the schoolground, as he was the first guy to attend our highschool and play for Ajax (at least in the recent history) It was great playing with him or just watching him play during the annual easter tournaments. Other than because of his skills, he was a well liked kid, definitely not shy, but not arrogant either. He just seemed to fit in really well.
As from what i've heard from people that are still in contact with him, he hasn't changed a bit, though he obviously has a lot less free time.

As i saw him play in the games vs Roda and NEC, he really not only seems like the average quick winger, but also physically strong. This means he'll win a lot of 50-50 balls, and create a lot of space for himself by overpowering the full back. The fact that he can cross a ball (unlike some of our other wingers) really gives him the edge over the other alternatives for the right wing.

That's right. It's a Dutch thing. Combinations of vowels (ie, ei, eu, oe, etcetera)make for an entirely new sound in Dutch. Those sounds are usually very hard to pronounce for foreigners..

Daniel (without the dots on the e) would be pronounced as [ Da-neel ] in Dutch (the underscored bit is the syllable you would stress). As you all know the name should be pronounced as [ Dan-nee-yul ] in English. In Dutch the a and the e are pronounced even more sharply: [ Dah-nee-yell ]. In Dutch you can show that by adding those two dots on the e. They basically mean: 'do not combine these two vowels, making them sound like 'ee', but pronounce both of them, making for an [ee-yuh] type of sound.

Oh well, it's Ridders anyway...

I saw the highlights of the match against Den Haag and I think De Ridder was simply brilliant. Now I'm thinking, where will Pienaar play once he recovers ?

called "turn over" something, im not sure
good for Koeman especially.

Pienaar should play on the '10' position, where he belongs. He was a right winger for a while because of the lack of wingers. It is not his positon however, and with the way VDV has been playing lately and Litmanen not likely to return, i think he has a fair shot at claiming the attacking midfield position.

The performances of our man Ridders did not go unnoticed at the KNVB headquarters in the Zeist woods...

He received his first ever invitation for Young Oranje (a.k.a. Oranje U-21) today. He has been added to the squad for the friendly fixture in and against England on 17 February. (Does someone know where this game will be played exactly?)

For the record: the full squad of coach Cor Pot (not related to me) is as follows...

Vorm (FC Utrecht), Waterman (SC Heerenveen), Verhaegh, Huntelaar (AGOVV Apeldoorn), Zomer (FC Twente), Loovens, Gommans (Excelsior), Jansen, Hofs, Schaars, Fafiani (Vitesse), Kruiswijk (FC Groningen), Mathijssen (Willem II), Castelen (ADO Den Haag), De Ridder (Ajax).

Also for the record: never in history has the Young Oranje line-up been a reliable reflection of the future Oranje line-up... In other words: most of these folks should not regarded as the future of Dutch football. This will most definitely not be the Oranje squad for, say, the World Cup of 2010. I mean, players such as Sneijder, Van der Vaart and Robben are as young as these guys (or younger), but have already made their 'real' Oranje début. Meanwhile, players such as De Jong, Heitinga and Van Persie are apparently floating somewhere in between Young Oranje and Oranje. Obviously, the Oranje of 2010 is much more likely to feature their names than - with all due respect - Verhaegh of AGOVV Apeldoorn.

Congrats to Daniel de Ridder. An honour well deserved. I think he is definitely the answer as to who Andy vd Meyde's replacement is. His performance against ADO, as noted, was fantastic.

he'll be called up for real oranje in the near future if he keep playing for Ajax1 in his current form (moreover i expect that he'll be better than he is).
maybe within wc qualifier...however i want mr.advocaat to take him to Portugal, off course.
