Don't know if this is old news (my impression was he was halfway out the door)....but I think it's fantastic. Trabelsi is two of my favourite players....
SI.com states:
Ajax extends contracts for Maxwell, Trabelsi
Posted: Wednesday February 11, 2004 7:03PM; Updated: Wednesday February 11, 2004 7:02PM
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) -- Ajax Amsterdam has extended the contracts of two of its top defenders, Brazil's Maxwell and Tunisia's Hatem Trabelsi, for an additional two years, the club said Wednesday.
Trabelsi, 27, said earlier this month he would finish the current season with Ajax but hoped then to transfer a major club in England or Italy -- preferably Chelsea.

Hey....I may live in Belgium but I'm not that slow on the uptake....
This report was filed yesterday by "(AP)", my assumption was that it was a new development.......pity.....

According to the Sunday Express ( one of the very big nationals) there is an article today stating Hatem has signed a 2 year contract. It stated that it was bad news for Chelsea & Moan u as they would now have to pay a big transfer fee if they still wanted him.
I hope this proves to be an acurate story and that Hatem has agreed to the 2 year extension.

The best possible news given the circumstances. If a club has a genuine need for a talented right back, meaning they had probably budgeted the transfer, I don't think this will stall his departure much.Probably just lots of too-ing and fro-ing, consternation and finger-pointing,all followed by handshakes and make-up sex !

So, we finally seem to have a buyer for our beloved full-back. Swedish press writes that Arsenal offerd 40 million SEK (about 4 million Euro) for Trabelsi.
Sounds good, sell the guy!

Yeah, I'm afraid that's all we're gonna get for him now. Last season, when he actually played for Ajax and was on speaking terms with the club, several clubs were reportedly willing to pay 8.5 million euros for him. Now he hasn't played for a while, the whole world knows what's going on and that Ajax want to get rid of him - and het isn't 'hot' at the moment (for the simple reason that the Euro 2004 stars are).
So 4 million is not bad at all, given the circumstances. Ajax must of course 'play the game' (reject the bid, say that there more clubs are interested, etc.), but if nothing happens: go for it!

Sounds like a good result.
Does Ashley Cole play right or left back for Arsenal? I'm not sure if Trabelsi would displace him for a slot in the starting 11...

This reminds me of Arveladze, in 2000-2001 some Turkish club offered 9 million quid for him, but Ajax said no. Then Arveladze wouldn't extend his contract and Ajax were forced to sell him to Rangers for...3 million.

Ajax Netwerk has a link to an Evening Standard article "Arsenal battle for Trabelsi".Battle? What battle?
AJAX: We want 8 million euros
Arse: You'll get 4 and like it!
AJAX: (EYES WIDE) 4 million euros?
ARSE:No, 4 euros....Just Kidding!Yes, we get Trabeasley and you get 4 million euros.
AJAX: SOLD!
5 minutes and it's done.
