Seems like it's time to start a new thread for this chap... Ajax have announced a special press conference at the ArenA at 12:15 CET about "the return of Hatem Trabelsi".
Seems like he will actually return to the team, and I don't know what to think. He's a great player, but a lot has happened and I don't think it's a healthy thing for the club to bench - say - Nigel de Jong, Zdenek Grygera or Anthoiny Obodai, only because Mr Trabelsi wants show his qualities to win a transfer during the winter break... Doesn't seem right to me.
But anyway. Let's wait for the press conference...

Let him rot on the bench...we can always use him if we get an injury crisis.....

Sure, a lot has happened, but having a guy we pay (a big?) salary to rottening with Jong Ajax, or anywhere else doesn't make any sense either.
I say, let him come back and join the squad. He can compete on the same terms as the other guys, but right now he's of course far behind de Jong.
He's still an excellent player and if he can come back in good old form we can get quite a large transfer sum for him. The best for all parties I guess.
Don't get me wrong, I don't feel pity at all for the guy, but we'll probably get more money if he joins the team again. I hope we can get rid of him in the winter break tho.

I think Trabelsi should play... contract negotiations are rarely full of hugs and kisses. That's water under the bridge.
The fact is that our defense is in sore need of some experience. Giving away three to den haag is unacceptable. The return of Trabelsi and (hopefully) JOB will give us some solid options on the defense. The current crew isn't getting it done.

Maybe it is unfair to take out of the team De Jong or Grygera or anyone else in order to fit in Trabelsi again, but it is also true that Trabelsi is an outstanding fullback and I still cannot understand the lack of interest from the big clubs, coz so far only Arsenal approached Ajax for him.
Some may disagree with me but I tend to agree with DW1200. I would play Trabelsi, now that contract terms have been agreed.

i dont think the players should have a say in it, but the coaches definitely need to make de jong, grygera, and obodai feel like their opinion on the matter is important and that they understand he is only going to play so he can be sold.
it wont come down to what de jong and the lot think though, trabesli needs to play so he can be sold. i dont have anything wrong with that, cuz it will get ajax money and he will help the team in the process.

Actually, a few more clubs were interested in him (Man Utd at first, later Liverpool and Newcastle Utd), but they were all from England, so all of them were facing the same problem: the English authorities did not grant Trabelsi a working permit for the U.K.
Every country has different criteria for working permits for football players from outside the E.U. In England one of the criteria is that a player must have seen action in 75% of all official matches for his country in the past two years. Trabelsi didn't - and that was the reason why he couldn't get a working permit (this is what his laywer and his agent told to the press).

If Trabelsi's agent is to be believed they will not get a working permit for England.
But I'm sure there are examples of players who don't play for their national team and do play in England, so...

There are zillions of example just in France : Olivier Bernard, David Bellion, Lilian Nalis, Didier Domi, Kanoute before he decided to play for Mali and many more....

I think maybe that because they're european they are exempt, what with the european union, and breaking down all those barriers and whatnot.
As to Trabelsi, I think (my Dutch is very bad) I heard on Dutch tv that he had played 71% of games where he needed 75%. If thats true, it must be a typical self-important beaurocrat who denied him his work permit, especially if he missed some of those games through injury.

I am happy the whole thing is over. All conflict and bad press has been bad. If the team accepts him (which the seem to do) and Koeman accepts him (which he does) I will be willing to accept him on the condistion that he shows 100% commitment.

Yeah, but I still say we try to get rid of him in the winter break. He clearly wants a move to England and having a player in the squad that wants to be somewhere else is seldom good.

Hatem Trabelsi's agent, Mr Franklin Sedoc, said on AT5 television that the Tunisian fullback will most definitely not leave Ajax in the winter break. The player is said to be very happy at Ajax at the moment - and the fact that Ajax will still be in 'Europe' after the winter break was the decisive factor for Trabelsi. He will stay until season's end.
