ye... they know... but the pronunciation is very different so no one really cares....
Although going down what they are actually called... Major League Soccer gave me the chuckles the first time I heard it... though it was a joke, but now I know why it is called soccer since American Football has next to no contact at all with your feet and the ball. Just begging the question, "Where does the word 'soccer' come from"?

I believe "Soccer" came out of England. It used to be called "Associated Football" because there were the other types of football (Rugby, Aussie, etc.). In England, they used to put "-er" at the end of everything, like breakfast would become "Breaker" and such. So Associated Football became "Soccer".
Can't remember the book I found it in, but I believe this roughly how the story went, anyway.

mork and mindy I was watching a while ago and i kept hearing them call a land lord they didnt like Mr wanker, I thought surely that cant be right, then up came the credits and accross my screen was the name MR WANKER oh dear oh dear
