As there's a new season coming up and the old Pre-Season & Friendly Games thread was six pages long, I decided to close the old one and open a new one. For all your discussions about the summer 2003 pre-season campaign, including the Derby County and Nottingham Forest games as well as the Amsterdam Tournament: this is the place to be...

Or, of course, the Pre-Season & Friendly Games discussion on the new Ajax USA website. That discussion lives right HERE.

BTW sandwiched between the 2 games at Forest and Derby is a tantilising friendly which will have the crowds flocking to North Essex, viz : Braintree Town versus a Leyton Orient Club XI.

The other option is on 22nd July - Sheffield Wednesday v ADO Den Haag

And another one.
Interesting to note that Forest will not be segregating the fans as they believe that Ajax fans will not be attending the game.
Feyenoord played there a few years ago and it was the same situation. Just turned up on the day, paid the money and ended up in the Trent End. Saw the Feyenoord fans in the main stand, asked the steward if I could join them - no problem. A first in that I was allowed to walk around the pitch to join them.

Vak425, have you sussed out the pubs to go to in Nottingham and Derby yet? (Plenty of good ones to visit)

I have finally joined in with this site as I have enjoyed all the discussions. I have to admit that I have not seen Ajax in live action inspite of visting Amsterdam several times ( I have relatives in Amstelveen )

I am lucky that here in Uk Channel 5 TV show Dutch football and this last season Ajax were on for 17 full league games so I feel I am now ready to make some comments.

To get back on the subject with games at Derby and Nottingham next month I intend to see them both( and also get to the Arena for the real thing next season).

I would be interested to know if any of you regulars are to visit DERBY /FOREST as I would look forward to meeting some real Ajax supporters.

My mate has been to most Derby and Nottinham pubs in his soccer travels I will have to get him to recommend some.

No, not yet - relying on your goodself and Ray - will probably discuss at the annual Ajax-UK bbq next weekend ( well we are having one with Ray and Steve anyway.)

Wont be drinking much for the Forest game as I will be driving, but for Derby, hope to sink a few beers and try and change your allegiance from the dark side Womble.

Vak425, I think you know my view on a forest-ajax (deliberate - no capitals) game. If ever a football ground deserved to be 'attacked' during a game it would this one.....(don't ask me to justifiy it, because it is 'dislike' logic)

For the game in Derby, I'll be happy to show you around the places to drink and you may change your allegiance and decide that the pubs are far better places to be going than to watch the football

Also noticed that those friendly people from ADO are also playing
Chester away on 23rd and Wolves on 25th. Shame they are not playing on the 24th...

Yup, I'll be there.

You should definitely meet up with us. Vak425 will be going as well, plus a few more English friends of ours who come over to Amsterdam for Ajax games regularly. Should be great fun. We were at the Norwich City friendly last summer with almost the same group. We will keep you posted on our plans...

Recommended :
Nottingham.
Vat & Fiddle - more or less opposite the railway station, slightly to the left. Castle Rock Brewery Tap.
Lincolnshire Poacher - Mansfield Road. Free house, twinned with 'in de Wildemann' in Amsterdam.
Trip to Jerusalem. About 5 minutes walk from the station. Allegedly dates back to 1189.
Also worth trying.
Beeston.
The Victoria. Visible by train on approach to Beeston. About 5-7 minutes walk from the station.

Derby.
The Brunswick. Brew pub and free house about 2 minutes from the station. Possibly the nearest (and certainly the best) pub to the ground.
The Alexandra. Next door the Brunswick. Another free house.
Lots of other pubs near the station, but the beer quality is poor.
Plenty more in the city centre, but as I tend to spend most of my time (and money) in the above two I can't be bothered to give locations or descriptions. Can however recommend the following :
The Smithfield - near the 'Evening Telegraph' building.
The Silk Mill, The Dolphin and The Flowerpot - all within spitting distance of the cathedral.
Night life : As my musical tastes are limited to rock music, its not good.

Cheers Womble. Will see you in Derby, for sure. At The Brunswick, probably.

Unlike Vak425 I will not try to cure you, so don't worry.

Unfortunately, I think that my conversion crusade will be wasted as Womble is too heavily involved now with the Dark Side to see the light.

Maybe in years to come when he is sitting in front of the fire with his pipe and slippers he will look back on his life and recognise this one mistake.

I think that the Brunswick will also have at least two votes (which is two more than our Eurovision entry got) from the panel in Bocking and Milton Keynes.

Seems likely that Mrs Vak425's son (a Forest supporter) will be joining us on the 23rd.

Vak, don't bring an F-word supporter to the Vat & Fiddle...that's a Magpie pub!!! No "woodentops" allowed!

Actually I'm kidding, Notts fans are a friendly bunch......

YOU PIES!!!!!
(my other "love")

P.S. I'm really annoyed about the timing of these friendlies, I have to be in Madrid the latter half of that week and won't able to make a trip "home" to catch neither the F-word nor Derby games.

Hello all,

To all of you who will be coming to Nottingham and/or Derby on 23/25 July: if you feel like hooking up with two Dutchies (me and AFCA Madnezz) as well as Vak425 and a few other English Ajax fans, please drop me an e-mail so I can send you our plans (SPL, it would be great to meet up with you).

Also, Adfin, if you read this: are you still going? If so, get in touch!

By the way: let's not buy any tickets. I've been told that Forest will not reserve a special away section. They don't expect any Ajax fans to come over for this one. Which is a mistake. There will be a group of 150 fans, probably, just like last year in Norwich. So let's buy our tickets on the day, so we can sit together.

I'm trying to switch some stuff to fly into East Midlands airport of Friday night and get to the game v. Derby that evening.

As someone (AFC1900 ?) pointed out...there will be an Ajax-Forest fan and a Derby - Feyenooit fan in the group.....if I get there there will also be an Ajax - Notts County fan.....just to confuse matters........

Turns out that the feienoord fan (Womble) isn't a real Derby County fan. However, the problem is not solved as he's a Wimbledon fan. Which means we'll have a feienerd/Wimbledon fan (Womble) and an Ajax/Crystal Palace fan (good old Vak425)...

So, we'll also have a Forest and a Notts County fan, who both also support Ajax...

The question is: will we need a United Nations 'blue helmet' army for this fixture?

I have no problem with the Notts County bit.. It's the other team. I 'dislike'..(take that anyway, they both wear red and white )

Since the events of May 28th last year, I no longer have a problem with Crystal Palace. Unless Vak425 now supports Withdean 2000, it is no longer an issue (about Pal@r$e... whoops slipped up there).

What is the problem with your keyboards ? I fail to see how a 9 (10 in Dutch) letter word can be spelt with 8 letters with 2 vowels missing.
Also the letters 'it' are nowhere near 'rd'.
